Elementary Reading Curriculum

Albany Elementary School students receive universal instruction with Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA). CKLA is a language arts program for Grades PreK–5 that combines a multi-sensory approach to phonics with rich texts carefully sequenced to build content knowledge—so that students learn to read and read to learn at the same time. 

Every day in Grades PreK–2, students complete one full lesson that builds foundational reading skills, as well as one full lesson that builds background knowledge. In Grades 3–5, students start to master the skills of reading, further opening up their worlds.

Reading Interventions

At Albany Elementary School, all students participate in a daily What I Need (WIN) intervention block designed to support their individual reading needs. These needs are identified through a combination of assessment data and classroom performance.

Students with the most significant reading challenges receive targeted instruction from our reading interventionist, while others work with classroom teachers and additional school staff to strengthen their literacy skills. Students with reading-specific IEP goals will work with a special education teacher. Students who are performing significantly below level may receive a Personal Reading Plan.

Elementary Math Curriculum

Albany Elementary School students receive universal instruction with Bridges. The curriculum focuses on developing in students a deep understanding of math concepts, proficiency with key skills, and the ability to solve new and complex problems. Learning activities tap into the intelligence and strengths all students have by presenting mathematically powerful material alive with language, pictures, and movement.

Students in a Bridges classroom talk about math, describe observations, explain methods, and ask questions. They are encouraged to find multiple ways to solve problems and show different ways of thinking. This is a vital way to help students build more flexible and efficient ways to solve increasingly complex problems. Hands-on activities engage them in exploring, developing, testing, discussing, and applying mathematical concepts.
