Albany, WI, is peaceful place to raise your family, away from the hustle and bustle of city life, but close enough for an evening or weekend drive to experience arts, sports and restaurants in Madison, Janesville or Beloit. Our schools are the center of our small town, rural community. Highway 59 runs right through our downtown, as does the beautiful, serene Sugar River and dam.

The Village of Albany, home to just under 1,100 residents, was originally known as "The Pearl of the Sugar River," referring to the mussels, freshwater pearls and shells used for button manufacturing during the 1890s pearl rush. Now the village calls itself the "Sweetest Little Village on the Sugar River," offering the "peace and tranquility of country and river life, with abundant opportunities for entrepreneurs."

The village cites the area's English, Norwegian, Swiss and German heritage, whose influence remains "in the energy and friendliness of today's residents."

The Albany School District boundaries include the Village of Albany and the Towns of Albany, Brooklyn, Decatur, Mount Pleasant, Sylvester and Magnolia. Our towns are primarily rural, dotted by homes and farms in the rolling hills of Green County.

Life in Albany

After work and school, Albany offers plenty of family-friendly activities that will get children and teens off their devices and into nature and small-town living. You can:

• Go tubing, canoeing or kayaking on the Sugar River - S & B Tubing right on the waterfront provides easy access to your own lazy river.
• Enjoy treats at the Albany Sugar River General Store.
• Laugh and cheer loudly for your favorites in Albany's famous bed races during Riverfest, a three-day family-friendly event downtown the third weekend of August.
• Enjoy other Riverfest fun such as live music, a parade, kids kickball, an EMS Fish Boil, fatball softball and bean bag tournaments, volleyball, kids carnival, face painting, axe throwing, boat rides, bounce house and food stands.
• Walk, hike and bike along the Sugar River State Trail. Albany is the trail mid-point, with a trail station with restrooms, water and parking.
•  Hunt white-tailed deer, wild turkey, waterfowl, and small game in the 1,400+ acre Albany Wildlife Area. Albany High School has a TRAP Shooting Team.
• Snowmobile or cross-country ski through the Sugar River State Trail in winter.
• Sip hot chocolate, eat cookies and join holiday carols as you watch the tree lighting ceremony at Overlook Park at the annual Christmas at the Dam.
• Expand your knowledge with books and events at the Albertson Memorial Library (including a fun touch-a-truck event for the littlest community members).
• Join the Albany Conservation Club and annual events such as a the Sugar River Cleanup and Earth Day Trail Cleanup.
• Fish and teach anglers of all ages at "Hooked on Fishing," many of whom compete in "Carp O-Rama."
• Bowl at Albany Lanes, a 6-lane alley with a bar and grill featuring youth and adult leagues tournaments.
• Dine at the Albany Family Cafe (breakfast and brunch), Bobanna's Pizza, Albany Sugar River General Store, and the Dam Near Home Bar & Grill next to the Sugar River dam.
• Enjoy breakfast on the third Sunday of the month at the Albany American Legion Post 144. The Post also hosts a Memorial Day parade, ceremony and chicken dinner.
• Admire cars, trucks and motorcycles at the Albany Lion's Club Auto Show with food, beverages, raffles and awards.
• Join the Albany WI Chamber and those working to improve the downtown and greater Albany area. One recent project was installing hanging baskets downtown.
